Workington Town boss Chris Thorman says he is excited to watch playmaker Blain Marwood develop – after the talented Cumbrian hooker/half-back signed a new deal with the club.

Marwood, son of former Town legend Dean, is the latest member of Town’s squad to agree a new deal to stay at Derwent Park in 2021.

And Thorman believes the 22-year-old’s speed and agility will be key for his side when they begin their League 1 campaign.

“With the new rule changes coming into effect recently and having watched how the NRL and Super League teams have adapted to them, I’ve had to think about how our squad would look when it comes to the evolution of our game,” said Thorman.

“I think re-signing Blain Marwood is an indicator of that. Blain’s game is based around speed and agility.

“I’ve worked hard with him on all defensive aspects of his game and if he continues to improve at the rate he was pre lockdown, I’m really excited to see Blain develop in a Town shirt.

“On top of that he has a fantastic attitude and is exactly the sort of person we want in the squad.”

And Marwood is ready to get back into action after agreeing a two-year deal with the club.

He added: “I’m really happy to re-sign. I felt like I was getting a good run of games before the virus stopped play, so I can’t wait for 2021 to start and get back to it.”
