RESEARCH will be carried out between The Rugby Football League and Leeds Beckett University to quantify the risk of head trauma in RL.

Betfred Super League clubs have agreed to work on the study with hopes to reduce risk in the future.

The Instrumented Mouthguard Project will cover more than 1,200 players across 50 teams at all levels of the game.

The pilot runs from May to August and involves researchers testing mouthguards on players in training and games. Findings from the initial pilot will inform which mouthguards are used in the full study, which begins in November and runs for three years.

The research project is designed to work hand-in-hand with injury surveillance currently underway in both the men's and women's Super League Academy competitions.
