In today's gallery, we look back at some spectacular scenes captured on the streets of Cumbria as cycling stars from across the world arrived in our region to race.

The Tour of Britain, the UK's most prestigious cycle race, takes place every September.

On September 10, Cumbria will play its part in Stage 6 of the Tour of Britain.

As previously announced, Cumbria will welcome the race for a third consecutive year when it hosts the start of this stage, marking its 11th appearance in the UK’s biggest cycling event (only London has welcomed the Tour of Britain on more occasions – 13).

For those lucky to have been present to witness a stage of the race, a brush with cycling royalty has duly beckoned.

We have pictures from the 2016 edition of the famous race. That year, Stage 2 of the race was held in our region, with the race beginning in Carlisle city centre, heading through the heart of Cumbria and the Lake District and passing through Penrith, Cockermouth, Keswick and Ambleside, before the finish atop the testing 11% climb of Beast Banks in Kendal.

Pictured in today's gallery, we see national hero Sir Bradley Wiggins signing autographs for onlookers as he prepared to race through our streets.

And who can forget another brush with the stars in the form of the legendary Mark Cavendish?

Not only do we have a delightful snap of the Isle of Man star congratulating race leader wearing the yellow jersey Andre Greipel but we also see the moment the so-called 'Manx Missile' set off from the centre of Carlisle

It is no wonder, therefore, that the pictures in today's set show capacity crowds, all vying to catch a glimpse of the riders as they made their way through the streets of Cumbria.

For those featured, there is no doubt that these pictures bring back happy memories, with these snaps undoubtedly collectors' items for many of those who were there!

As ever, make sure to get in touch with us if you do spot yourself and share your recollections of the event in the comments online!

We'd love to hear from you...
