The A66 was closed in both directions at Stainburn following a serious collision involving a car and a heavy goods vehicle this morning.
Cumbria Police were called at around 7.20am.
The North West Ambulance Service and Cumbria Fire and Rescue also attended the scene of the crash between the car and the HGV.
A spokesman for the fire service said: "Firefighters used one breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish the fire and were in attendance for one hour and twenty minutes."
The road reopened at around 1.15pm.
