A glamping site near Aspatria has been given the green light.
David Watson, of Moorhouse, Greengill, applied for retrospective planning permission for a luxury camping development in an agricultural field.
Mr Watson already has a Viking forge, called Moorforge, and a longhouse on his property.
Allerdale council's planning officials recommended the application for refusal and called it "unsustainable" because its location would require visitors to drive.
But councillors voted in favour of approving the plans, with eight for, two against and one abstention.
Councillor Tony Markley, who moved approval, said he believed the economic benefits justified going against planning policy.
Because the decision went against planning policy, it will have to be advertised before planning permission can be formally granted.
If further objections are received than the council must consider the application again.
