Children at Dearham Primary School have been learning what to do in a medical emergency.

A total of 150 pupils have completed the British Heart Foundation's Heart Start course and learned skills like how to use a defibrillator.

Heart Start courses have been run in the school by Dearham and District First Responder Alec Moore.

Children in years three to six have learned the first actions they can take to deal with a variety of medical emergencies including bleeding, choking and serious burns as well as heart attacks.

They have also learned how to call for medical help and how to put patients in the recovery position while waiting.

Mr Moore said: "We have taught them the NHS CPR which stands for call, push and rescue.

"I am grateful to the head, Sam Kidd, who allowed me in the school and the teachers who have helped so much, and to the British Heart Foundation who provide everything I need for the course."

Mr Moore said the minutes following an emergency and critical and knowing what to do could save a life.
