The Cockermouth branch of the Royal Air Forces Assocation has elected a woman as its chair, for the first time in its 30-year history.
Susan Coombs, of Kirkgate, was elected at the recent AGM. She has served on the committee as a volunteer for the last four years and was vice chair.
"I joined four years ago when the branch was looking like it might have to close if they could not get volunteers. My father and uncle served in the RAF during World War II and other members of my family have also served in peace time.
"A few of us joined then, we now have over 60 in the association," said Susan, a musician and voice coach.
The branch serves much of West Cumbria and offers friendship, help and support to service personnel and their families. It meets once a month at the Conservative Club on Main Street.
She was delighted to be elected.
"The previous chairman, Doug Newham, of Caldbeck, is 95. He stepped down and is now president," said Susan.
