St Michael's Church in Workington is joining the campaign to buy the town's RNLI a new lifeboat.

Flimby Male Voice Choir are to perform at the church on Friday with all proceeds going to the lifeboat appeal.

Margaret Smith, part of the church's social committee, said St Michael's raises money for many causes.

She added: "We do a lot of charity work from the church.

"The RNLI appeal is of special interest because so many of our parish lived on the harbour when there were still houses there. The lifeboat meant a lot to them."

Margaret Jones, the vice chairwoman of the church council, said that after St Michael's was destroyed by fire in 1994, a condition of grants it received to rebuild was that the church supported the community.

She added: "We have been raising money for outside charities ever since."

Parish administrator Lorna Wilson said last weekend the church hosted a concert to mark the Battle of the Somme.

"It was the same one that was presented in Maryport featuring school students from the town."

The church will also hold at community carol service at 2 pm on Tuesday, December 13 for an Alzheimer charity.

Tonight's event begins at 7pm. All welcome.
