Workington's beer festival is not just for ale lovers.

Trainees at the town’s James Core health and beauty on Oxford Street got a sneak preview of the latest addition to Oktoberfest – a prosecco bar.

Now in its seventh year, organisers decided to build on the popularity of last year’s wine bar and attract people who may not ordinarily go to a traditional ‘beer festival’.

The three-day Oktoberfest, organised by Workington Rotary, begins at the Carnegie Theatre next Thursday.

Patricia Hoggarth, Workington Rotary president, said: “It’s something new. We hope it’ll be a nice touch and a nice part of the festival.

“It’s new for people who are not beer or cider drinkers and it means that they can still come along.

“I’m very excited. It’s nice for us to put on these events and to be able to bring these events to the town.”

Grapevine, of Embleton, will be providing wine and prosecco for the event.

The festival will feature more than 60 ales and ciders from breweries across Cumbria and beyond.

It raises money for local charities including Hospice at Home West Cumbria.

This year its two main sponsors are Derwent Recycling Services Ltd and the Derwent Cumberland Pencil Company.

The Jake Leg Jug Band, the Nightriders and The Misfitz are among the bands performing at the festival.
