Adrian Kirkbride, who coaches at Nemesis Boxing Club in the town, has organised the Homecoming event, which will include a bout to raise awareness and money for Papyrus, a charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.
Suicide is a cause close to Adrian’s heart as an ex-forces man who has lost friends. He will hold the event at Grasslot Welfare Sports and Social Club, in Maryport, on Sunday, October 2.
Adrian said: “I hadn’t heard of Papyrus and I don’t think many people have. A lot more people could be helped so if we can save even one life then it will be worthwhile.
“Boxing builds confidence but there’s also a feel-good factor and if you give kids direction and a feeling of being worthwhile, they’ll build confidence in themselves.”
The semi-pro card will include two BBU Northern Area title fights and Lewis Graham, 17, of Dearham, will fight in an exhibition match against David Gilhespy.
Former British, Commonwealth and World professional boxer Glenn McCrory, who held the IBF version of the cruiserweight world championship, will also appear.
