Sickness at Allerdale council fell by more than a third last year.
Figures show that the council's average absence rate was equivalent to 6.78 days per full-time worker in 2015-16.
It was the lowest rate of all Cumbria's district councils, and below Allerdale's 10.35 days in 2014-15.
The reduction meant the council paid out £40,000 less in sickness absence costs last year than the year before.
A council spokeswoman said the introduction of flexible working hours and a focus on staff wellbeing were among changes that could have contributed to the change.
She added: "Lately we have been encouraging our colleagues to join the new leisure centre to support this."
At Cumbria County Council the absence average rate was equivalent to 12.01 days per full time worker for 2015-16.
