Travellers have set up camp on playing fields next to Maryport's new Lidl supermarket.
An Allerdale council spokesman confirmed they were there but said they were not interfering in any way with the supermarket built.
He said the playing field on which they have parked is not used or maintained in winter and they were causing no problem.
He said: "An Allerdale officer has been to speak to them and they are not expected to remain in Maryport for a long time."
