They voted unanimously to recommend refusal of a planning application for another 12 illuminated fascias at the service station on Lamplugh Road.
Councillor Isobel Burns said: “This is absolute overkill up there, it’s ridiculous. I feel so sorry for the old folks who live there, it’s too much at the entrance to the town.”
They voted to recommend refusal on the grounds they would constitute overdevelopment and would be out of character, unneighbourly and create light pollution.
Allerdale council will make the final decision. The service station reopened after a £1.5 million redevelopment and includes branches of Spar, Subway and Greggs.
