Keith Curle is set for talks with Carlisle United's under-fire owners in a bid to learn how much cash he will have to spend on new players this summer.

The manager has spoken of his ambition to bring in "quality" recruits who will take the Blues into the League Two promotion race next season.

Curle said he wants to make "statement signings" and hopes his rebuilding work can help lift spirits after the stormy final home game of the season.

Chairman Andrew Jenkins, who along with his fellow directors came in for anti-board chants during the Oxford game, has insisted he wants to give the manager "as much cash as possible."

And Curle, who has already met two possible targets, said: "The first thing I need to do in the next couple of weeks is make sure I have the right conversations with the right people at the football club regarding the budget.

"The budget will determine where we are shopping and what product we are able to bring to the club."

At a time when the Brunton Park regime is facing criticism from supporters, Curle says he is keen to see a united front at the club.

The manager said Saturday's chants were "not nice to hear" but his focus remained on building a better team for the fans.

He said: "Part and parcel of my job is making sure the focus is on the football pitch, making sure supporters' focus is as well.

"When I first came in there was disgruntlement and disharmony, we managed to temper and calm that down by performances and results on the pitch.

"I don’t see it being any different [now]. My role at the club won't change. We need as many people as possible focusing on what we are trying to do on the pitch, and that makes my job lot easier.

"I keep going back to saying I need to bring in better quality, which will get us better results.

"I'm not going to hide away or shy away from that, and I'm not going to gloss over the fact. We've made massive strides to get to mid-table, and to get to the upper reaches now we need better quality.

"We haven't got bags of money to get the players who wouldn’t normally be attracted to the club, so my job is to get players with the right qualities, temperament and character to add more than we've achieved this season."

Curle has also insisted United will not simply be going through the motions during their final game against his former club Notts County, which has little riding on it for either side.

Carlisle's final league position is still to be decided and the Blues, currently 12th, could finish anywhere between 9th and 14th.

Curle added: "Some people might say [the players] have nothing to play for, but believe me, they have.

"They've got to stay with me, stay on that journey, stay in that changing room."
