Every child enjoys time with their grandparents.

And there is one group in West Cumbria which is devoted to the special relationship.

Grandtots, which meets in Flimby, is dedicated to helping children enjoy playtime with their grandmothers and grandfathers.

The people behind it believe it is the only organisation of its kind in the county.

Now after 10 years of success, it is looking to create a similar group in Workington.

This group is run by charity Barnardo's and is funded through Cumbria County Council.

It has had a steady membership of around 15 grandparents, most of whom are from Flimby though some travel in from further afield.

Louise Bainbridge, the charity's early help and outreach team manager for Allerdale, said: "When it first started there was no existing parent-toddler group."

She added that in many families it is grandparents rather than professionals who carry out most of a family's extra childcare.

This group is designed to help them take part in activities which would not be easily done in their own homes.

Louise added many grandparents may feel uncomfortable attending a regular group for parents and toddlers and that they can head to this meeting and know they will have plenty in common with the other adults.

They also get the chance to see how new educational techniques are used, which they can then put into effect in when they spend time on their own with their grandchildren.

Jean Tytek, of West Lane, Flimby, attends with her granddaughters Mayzie Donald, three and Effie Donald, two.

She said: "This is brilliant, all the adults have got something in common and all the children get to mix."

Rachel Edgar, of St Helens Avenue, Flimby, was there with her five-month-old granddaughter Gracie Lynn.

She has been going to the group for three-and-a-half years with other grandchildren.

She said: "We all get to spend quality time with our grandchildren in a fun environment and there is more stuff to do here than in your living room."

Sandra Farrell, of Margaret Street, Flimby, was there with three-year-old Evie-Grace Ramsden and eight-month-old Abigail Ramsden.

She said: "It is a good thing to come here."

The group caters for youngsters who are newborns up to the age of five years old and meets every fortnight in West Allerdale Children's Centre on Sand Lane in Flimby.

The organisers now want to create a group in Workington and are looking to see if people in the town are interested in this.
