A new bee-themed cafe will bring a buzz to Workington after opening its doors on Monday.

The Honeypot Tearooms has been launched by the charity Groundwork, which runs Gwk Shop, selling upcycled furniture, in the former Chambers Homecentre building on James Street.

It will now offer refreshments, including a range of homemade cakes, plus wheat, gluten and dairy-free products.

Nicola Greggain, performance manager at Groundwork, said the success of the furniture shop was a springboard for the new venture.

She said: "Sometimes people are about early for a doctor's appointment and the feedback we got was that they would like a nice cup of tea.

"We're quite central for the doctors and for people to come in and have a cuppa."

The cafe will be run by people volunteering with the charity and will also offer drinks to take away.

There are four tables available for customers and it will be open from Monday to Saturday.

Nicola added: "Eventually if it does take off we will look at expanding and doing warm and cold food and turning it into a bigger cafe.

"A lot of people have said that they would like to see gluten-free and there's a real demand."

Groundwork opened the furniture shop in September.
