Workington Town Council wants to take over the upkeep of a Harrington footpath.
The path, known as Rae's Way, connects Beckstone Primary School with Main Road.
Up to 100 children use the footpath every day.
It is overgrown, but the county council only cut it once a year.
Chris Bagshaw, town clerk, told the town's environment committee that the county council did not have money to do it more often.
Chairman Denise Rollo said: "We need to get the money that the county council uses for that one time they cut it and then do the maintenance ourselves as many times as it's needed."
The town council will put its proposal forward to the county council.
