Cumbria County Council has helped to launch the careers of 37 young people by offering them an apprenticeship.
There were more than 300 applicants for the opportunities which include roles in higher project management, business and administration and street lighting.
Training provider Gen2 is helping to deliver the scheme which will help train the apprentices.
Mike Smith OBE, Gen2 chief executive, said: "The number of apprentices clearly demonstrates the council’s commitment to developing the skills of our local young people across the county."
The county council has taken on 120 apprentices in the last two years and some applicants were not in employment or education before being recruited.
