The walk came just over two months after the Cockermouth School pupil lost her battle against a rare form of cancer aged 15.

Walkers included school friend Jasmine Balmer, 15, of Dovenby, who walked the last 10 miles in bare feet, having picked up severe blisters.

The group were among 300 people taking part in a charity walk from Whitehaven to Rowrah.

The walk was organised by Whitehaven School department head Rob Huck and is a regular event at the school.

The money raised through sponsorship at this year’s event was to go to the Well Child Charity which supports babies, toddlers and young people. but after learning about Adele’s death through his daughter Kirsty Barton, who taught the youngster at Dearham Primary School, Mr Huck decided the funds would be split between the Well Child Charity and the Children’s Cancer Trust, at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where Adele was treated.

Cockermouth School’s head of PE Matthew Woodcock, who joined in the walk, said he was proud of the 60 or so students from Cockermouth who had taken part.

“They were all so determined to do this for their friend,” he added.

They were joined by Adele’s parents John and Nicola and her younger brother Ross.

Mrs George said she was overwhelmed by the numbers of her and her husband’s friends who joined in the walk.

By the beginning of this week donations for the Children’s Cancer Trust in memory of Adele had reached £20,000, not counting any money raised by the walk.
