A Great Broughton man who has worked with the village school on various World War One projects enjoyed a special service in Westminster Abbey to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice.

Ray Dobie, a governor at Broughton Primary School, was invited to the event on Sunday evening in recognition of his work. The Queen and members of the royal family also attended.

"The service was everything you would expect, solemn yet uplifting at the same time. The music and choir singing were magnificent," said Mr Dobie.

Earlier in the day he took part in the two minutes silence in the grounds of Westminster Abbey, which were laid out with plots of crosses and wreaths from over 400 different divisions of the armed forces. He also watched the march past.

The following day he visited the cenotaph.

"Everyone you met, in the pub, café or taking photos was 'in town' for the Remembrance. There was a good atmosphere around what is at the heart a series of sombre events all duly respected," he said.
