Talented musicians from Cockermouth School took part in an annual competition organised by the town's Rotary Club.

After performing in front of an audience and five judges in the school's Eco Centre, two winners were chosen: saxophonist Jack Moore (instrumental) and Sam Weakley (vocal).

Four Rotarians were judging, alongside Papcastle composer Dr Phil Wood.

A spokesman said: "The standard was very high and the competition fierce. In the instrumental competition there was a trumpet player, pianist, clarinettist and saxophonist.

"The winner of the instrumental competition was saxophonist Jack Moore, who gave two contrasting performances of 'Tenderly' and 'Don’t shoot the Duck'." The runner up was clarinettist Alex Tyrrell.

Sam Weakley sang 'Who is Sylvia' by Finzi and 'Some Enchanted Evening' by Rodgers and Hammerstein.

"These were sung with a convincing tone, musicianship and a great feeling for the contrasting styles of the pieces," said the spokesman.

The runner up was Becky Stevenson.

The leader of the judging panel and competition co-ordinator Richard Bennett used to be head of music at the school.

He said: "The performers were a credit to themselves, their teachers and parents. It was a wonderful evening of high quality music making.’’

The four placed performers will go through to the Rotary District Competition, which will be held in February.
