A Brigham man has published his grandfather’s First World War diary and memoir.
Phil Davies is a nuclear sector consultant. His grandfather, Travis Hampson, was a doctor in the Royal Army Medical Corps from the start of the war and was awarded the Military Cross for his service in the front line.
"I put the bare-bones text of his diary and memoir online in the 1990s," said Phil.
"The new tidied-up version, called Hampson's War, contains copies of photographs taken at the time as well as sketches and other documents.
"I’m aiming at a UK and international readership, so the book has been produced in Amazon print-on-demand and Kindle eBook formats."
The book was inspired by a trip to Ypres, Belgium, in September.
“I was reminded how much interest in the Western Front there still is from various parts of the world," said Phil.
"Lots of people go to the daily remembrance ceremony at the Menin Gate and it’s quite a moving experience. The 100th anniversary of the Armistice this November spurred me on to finish the book."
Phil has donated his original manuscript material, photographs and other items to the Museum of Military Medicine at Aldershot.
