AGED just 14, Dominic Wilson has his sights set on making a mark in politics.

And he’s about to get a chance at joining some of the country’s key decision-makers inside a political powerhouse.

The Keswick School pupil has signed up for work experience that will take him to the Houses of Parliament.

He has secured a place with Workington MP Sue Hayman because he sees a future for himself in the world of politics.

Dominic, of High Harrington, will initially spend a week in Mrs Hayman’s constituency office, before later travelling to London to work with her in June.

Mrs Hayman said: “He wants to see what happens there and how it all works.”

Work experience is just one way that year 10 pupil Dominic is dipping his toes into political waters.

His mum, Adele Wilson, said: “He’s thinking about getting into the Youth Parliament.”

She organised the work experience role after hearing about the opportunity from another parent whose son did the same.

“The main thing he’s looking forward to is getting into debating,” Mrs Wilson said.

Keswick Secondary School run an A-Level course in politics which Dominic is eager to study.

Mrs Wilson added: “He loves his drama as well. There is no better stage [than politics].”

Keswick School careers adviser and work experience coordinator, Mel Avery, said: “Work experience is invaluable for all students.

“It broadens their horizons, takes students out of their comfort zones, and it gives them a real insight into the world outside of the school bubble.”

Headmaster Simon Jackson added of Dominic’s placement: “This is an amazing opportunity.

“We have always found local politicians willing to engage with our young people in a range of positive ways.”
