THE authority behind a bid to build a new stadium in Workington has pledged to address concerns around lack of information provided on the plans.

Allerdale council wants to build a new community stadium to replace Workington Reds’ home at Borough Park and Workington Town’s base of Derwent Park.

Plans would see Borough Park being demolished and replaced by the new facility, which would also include office space for Sellafield workers as well as a NHS Community Primary Care Centre.

But as a public consultation launched by the council comes to a close today, concerns have been raised by a number of bodies who say they have not been provided with sufficient information to respond to the plans.

Highways England said a traffic assessment provided to it, did not include a Saturday peak time assessment of the A66 Ramsey Brow junction, which it wants to see.

Sport England has submitted a holding objection until further details are provided.

Fiona Pudge, planning manager for the organisations, said: “Unfortunately there is insufficient information to enable Sport England to adequately assess the proposal or to make a substantive response.”

She asked for details including technical specifications on the pitches to be provided. Ms Pudge is also seeking reassurances on how football and rugby would coexist at Derwent Park while the new stadium is built.

She said: “There is no information to show the two sports are able to coexist and meet their match and training fixtures or what the time period will be.”

Natural England said the project could have a potential significant effect on the River Derwent and Bassenthwaite Lake Special Area of Conservation. However, it says further information is required to determine the significance of the impact.

A spokesman for Allerdale council said: “The consultation stage in the planning process is designed to be the time when any issues can be raised. This is normal procedure with any planning application.

“The project team will be responding to all requests for further information, and we shall be working with all consultees who raise any other planning-related issues. We are confident they can be addressed.”
