Talented primary school pupils from the Cockermouth area took part in a Young Speakers' Competition.

Seven schools were involved, the overall winner was Ava Smith from Bridekirk Dovenby School, runner up was Matthew Irving, of Fairfield School.

The event was organised by Karen Shankland, headteacher at Broughton Primary School, and took place at the United Reformed Church.

A year six child from each school was selected to talk for five minutes on a range of subjects.

The three judges had a tough job. They were: Cheryl Quine (head of English at Cockermouth School), Rachel Laverack (general adviser for the Local Authority) and Catherine Hetherington (owner of The New Bookshop, Cockermouth).

Ian Routledge, of Cockermouth School, congratulated all the pupils.

A spokesman said: "Ava delighted and impressed listeners with stories of her great grandfather and why she would like to meet this fascinating relative who died before she was born. It was an evening she will never forget, especially when presented with two trophies from David Malloy, the current mayor of Cockermouth.

"Matthew Irving thoroughly entertained with his vision for the future."
