A woman found unconscious in Workington town centre in the early hours of this morning has been identified, Cumbria police have confirmed.

The 38-year-old woman was found with a head injury on Pow Street shortly before 2am.

She is currently receiving medical treatment at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle where officers said she was in a stable condition and responding to treatment.

The woman was carrying no formal identification when she was found and officers initially appealed for help to find out who she was.

Investigations are continuing to establish how she suffered her injuries.

Curwen Park and an area around HSBC bank were cordoned off to enable officers to investigate the incident.

The cordon has since been lifted around the bank and is also being taken down around the park.

Detective Chief Inspector Craig Smith said: “We are appealing for anyone who may have been in or around this area between 1am and 2am this morning, who may have seen or heard anything, to contact us.”
