ROTARIANS were out in force in Cockermouth, tidying up the town as part of World Environment Day.

Fifteen people from the rotary clubs of Cockermouth and Bassenthwaite took to the streets with their litter picking kit.

They visited Waste Lane and headed down the town cyclepath, filling more than 20 bin bags.

Valerie Ayre said: "World Environment Day is about encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. It is the 'people's day' for doing something to take care of the Earth.

"We made our way along various routes, collecting and clearing rubbish as we went.

"As rotarians we want to take action to create positive, lasting change across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves and this small gesture around our town will add to the activities being carried out globally by rotarians."

Allerdale Borough Council supplied litter picks and bags and collecting the filled bags following the event.
