Five good causes have been given a boost thanks to a union branch.

The Whitehaven branch of Unite the Union handed over £500 each to the recipients, using money collected by its Sellafield construction branches.

Among those picking up cheques were Laura Kelly and Laura Mackereth of Cleator Moor, who are preparing for a charity climb of seven peaks in seven days.

One donation went to the family of Low Moresby mother-of-four Dianne Milfull, who died in March.

The money, picked up by her daughter Sophie, an apprentice pipe fitter, will help cover the cost of her funeral.

Prolific fundraiser Gary McKee picked up a cheque for Macmillan Cancer Support, a cause to which he and his sons Alfie and Beau have dedicated many fundraising challenges.

Young Workington cricketer Regan Jackson was also given £500, which will go towards a sporting trip to South Africa in February next year, helping young people grow both on and off the field of play.

Also receiving money was Furness Catholic Amateur Boxing Club in Barrow, which will put the donation towards the purchase of its building, ensuring it can continue to offer young people in the community its services free of charge.

Ryan Armstrong, regional officer for Unite the Union, said: “Unite forms part of the community and the community forms part of Unite.

“The commitment from our members to generously donate monies to these causes also reinforces the Unite Sellafield Construction Branches continued drive, to support local charities, good causes and youth initiatives.

“We are proud to support these amazing causes, which have such an impact in the county.”
