COCKERMOUTH town councillors agreed to support celebrations to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
They were contacted by The Armed Forces Charity, which is planning events nationally on May 8 next year.
"The town has a tradition of supporting the Armed Forces, this is something we should lead on," said Councillor Alan Smith.
The town has an existing World War One committee involving various community groups.
Councillors agreed that two of their members should join this with a view to marking the VE Day anniversary too.
Councillor Andrew Semple said: "I feel very passionate about it and would like to see more about the Cockermouth people involved."
He and Councillor Stephen Barnes agreed to be on the committee.
Councillor Isabel Burns said: "We should be encouraging kids in schools to take part in this. If we have a service we should invited them to participate a bit more."
