Workington engineering firm TSP Engineering has been handed a prestigious safety award for the second year running.

It has been given the RoSPA Gold Award for proving its ongoing commitment to raising health and safety standards.

John Coughlan, chief executive of TSP Engineering, said: “I am really pleased to have learned TSP Engineering has again been awarded Gold by RoSPA for our safety management record at our plant in Workington.

"This is thanks to all our employees and their extensive passion and knowledge regarding safety awareness."

TSP Engineering will be presented with the award during a ceremony in Glasgow in September.

The award comes a month after the firm was the first in the world to gain a new safety standard, which focuses on improving safety in the nuclear sector and the supply chain of the nuclear energy sector.

The company has also been shortlisted in the in-Cumbria Business Awards 2019 in the Best Manufacturing Business category and Mr Coughlan has been nominated for the Businessperson of the Year accolade.

TSP Engineering is a wholly-owned subsidiary of British Steel, which was forced into liquidation earlier this year.

The Workington facility is trading as normal and Mr Coughlan hopes that a new owner can be found for the business.

The company said: "John has been key in supporting their employees and ensuring TSP Engineering continue trading as usual, so it’s wonderful to see him gain recognition."
