CAMPAIGNERS will be asking people to sign a petition calling for Allerdale Council to declare a climate emergency.

There will be a street stall on Cockermouth Main Street from 10am to noon on Saturday where people can sign a petition.

Over 230 local councils throughout the country have already made the declaration.

The Cockermouth branch of the Labour Party is asking local people, regardless of their politics, to support their campaign, which also calls for Allerdale to pledge to become carbon neutral by 2030 and create an action plan with interim targets in order to achieve this goal.

"There is an on-line petition calling on Allerdale Council to agree to a number of points alongside declaring an emergency, but we want to expand the numbers on the petition by giving local people the opportunity to sign while they are out shopping," said Juliet Wilson, chair of the Cockermouth branch and Workington constituency Labour Party.

Local School Strike students will be supporting the campaign, calling on Allerdale to make the area more sustainable and an environmentally friendly place to live.
