A Carlisle construction firm has been lauded for two major projects in Cumbria.
Cubby Construction, based at Kingmoor Park, won the Collaborative Partnership Award and was highly commended in the Project under £1 million of the Year category at the Civil Engineering Contractors’ Association NW annual awards.
It won the partnership award for its work with United Utilities to improve Yearl Weir on the River Derwent at Workington and was entered in the project category for the extension to Glenridding Pier in Ullswater.
In Workington, Cubby Construction stabilised the riverbanks and extended and improved an existing fish pass, allowing migratory salmon to make their way up river to spawning grounds.
It said: “Close collaboration with specialists, use of innovative temporary damming and natural bank stabilisation methods enabled Cubby Construction to deliver extensive damage remediation and key fish pass improvements, while causing minimal environmental impact to one of the UK’s most pristine river systems.”
At Glenridding, it worked on behalf of Lake District Estates to extend the pier for Ullswater ‘Steamers’.
It designed the extension and worked during the off-season to install it, allowing the vessels to continue running on the lake.
Mike Robinson, business development manager at Cubby Construction, said: “It was fantastic to win the awards, which show we can deliver diverse and challenging projects and it will enhance our reputation.
“We have to thank our clients for giving us the opportunity and our fantastic workforce.”
