Colourful street art designs have been created by youths in a bid to brighten up bus shelters across a West Cumbrian village.

Youngsters who attend Great Clifton Community Youth Group have created the eye-catching murals.

Hayley Bishop, of the Allerdale Community Development Team at Cumbria County Council helped the youth group apply for a grant to fund the project. Funding was awarded to pay for three sessions, led by Ian Alcock of Young Cumbria.

The young people drew the designs and around 10 young people then spray painted a bird and lollipop design on the north side shelter at Greengarth.

A second session was then held where a bold geometric pattern was sketched out by Mr Alcock at the shelter on the south side of Main Road, near the Old Ginn House. A third design has been created by three young volunteers on the north side, opposite the Old Ginn House.

Jonathan Coles, Chair of Great Clifton Community Youth Group, said: "The reactions from residents have generally been very favourable."

He added that an additional two shelters are also due to be transformed in spring.
