WOMEN in Cockermouth will be linking up with others from around the world on Friday as part of World Day of Prayer.

Every year, on the first Friday in March, there is a service which begins in Samoa and ends 36 hours later back in the Pacific as the sun sets over the American Samoa.

Lay minister Ann Peate said: "In Cockermouth we will be joining in with people in over 120 countries and islands around the world at our service in St Joseph's RC Church at 10.30am on Friday.

"This year the service has been prepared by the Christian women of Zimbabwe. We will be encouraged to reflect on the difficulties and unrest that have plagued their country over many years as they share their stories.

"Women from all the town's churches have been involved in running this service and will be taking part in it.

"Everyone is welcome to join us - including men and children."

Following the service, there will be Lent Lunches provided in Christ Church Rooms, on South Street.
