An entertainer is keeping spirits high on Seaton streets.

Billy Walker, who is originally from Seaton and is now an actor and performer in America, has turned his attention from Hollywood to Hunter’s Drive in an effort to raise morale amongst residents.

Billy wanted to do something to cheer himself and the community up and to raise money for charity.

He decided to get people singing and intended to just sing to one street, with a collecting bucket for Hospice at Home West Cumbria, but word soon got around and he began getting requests for surprise birthday doorstep celebrations.

Billy borrowed a PA system from Workington Amateur Dramatic and Musical Society and, after gaining permission from the council and police, who he said have been nothing but supportive and encouraging, sang to the street he is staying on.

Over two days he did four surprise birthday calls, which were all supported by residents in each of the areas, and has collected £640 for Hospice at Home from the four impromptu serenades and from singing on his street.

Billy said: “It was only going to be to the street, but I put it on Facebook live and 1,300 people were watching from all around the world.

“It had 11,000 views in three days and people offering to donate from Los Angeles.”

He was then asked to sing happy birthday to a 93-year-old grandma and three other birthdays. He said: “I’ve had so many requests to do this, but it is really only for vulnerable people that are in their homes in Seaton. They never know it is happening, it’s always kept as a surprise.”

Any further requests will have to be put on hold for the next seven days as he will be recording and producing an acoustic album with 100 per cent of the profit going to Hospice at Home West Cumbria.

He will do one song a day for the next six days and release the album called ‘And on the 7th day’ on Thursday, available on iTunes. Physical copies will come out two to three weeks later.

Billy’s concerts have proved popular to all except one Seaton resident.

He said he was singing in Low Seaton when a cow took exception to the vocals of ‘Country Road’ and bolted from its field, tearing through someone’s garden. Luckily everyone was unhurt and the garden owner and farmer saw the funny side, even though it took the farmer around four hours to get it back into the field.

A video of the cow bolting can be seen on Billy Walker’s Facebook page, which is also where the acoustic album will be available from.
