COCKERMOUTH’S favourite fundraiser will be remembered for many years to come with a town bench dedicated to him.

Much-loved Kevin Twigg, 58, died last month at the West Cumberland Hospital. He had serious health issues and had contracted coronavirus.

At a recent online town council meeting, Coun Isabel Burns proposed a memorial seat be dedicated to him, in honour of everything he did for the town.

“He was a character in the town and I thought this would be nice thing to do,” she said.

All the councillors agreed it would be a fitting tribute to put a plaque on one of their benches in the Memorial Garden.

Kevin’s sister, Lorraine Jeffery, said: “I think it’s absolutely wonderful, he would have loved it.

“He used to live on Crown Street and overlooked the gardens. It’s somewhere to go and remember him.”

Over the years, Kevin raised money for a huge range of causes, including Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team, Copeland Occupational and Social Centre, Cancer Research UK, West Cumbria People First and Children in Need.

He bungee jumped, paraglided, organised countless sponsored walks, took part in bed pushes, truck pulls and party nights.

Four years ago he was honoured for his work to help others. He had spent the previous 16 years as a director of People First, which supports people with learning difficulties.
