Advice has been issued to the public on buying puppies from a reputable source, with the hope of combatting illegal puppy farming.
Cumbria Trading Standards are asking the public to choose a reputable source when looking to buy a pet.
The public are asked to choose a Kennel Club Assured breeder as they must follow regulations, making sure their puppies are in good health.
Puppies purchased from illegal breeders and importers could be sick due to inadequate conditions.
Cumbria Trading Standards said: “Be prepared to be put on a waiting list - a healthy puppy is well worth waiting for.
“Ask to see the relevant health test certificates for the puppy’s parents.”
If concerned that a breeder is an illegal puppy farmer contact: 08082231133.
