A MOTIVATED fundraiser has taken on a challenge to cycle over 1,000 miles indoors to support a cause close to his heart.

James Kirkbride, 36 of Harrington Road, Workington is cycling 1,086 miles within one week on his exercise bike, raising funds for Samaritans through Just Giving.

His virtual route will take him the distance between Land's End and John O'Groats.

The leading mental health helpline is an extremely personal cause for James, he said: “I’ve had some friends and colleagues over the last couple of years who have taken their own lives, it’s sad and it’s completely avoidable.”

The service, which provides a listening ear to people at their lowest point is in need of charity funds more than ever.

James said: “With everything that’s gone on with the coronavirus, everybody needs some support, it’s important that there are people to help when you need them.”

He is no stranger to an endurance challenge having raised funds for the equivalent service in Australia. James completed a 24 hour row to raise the funds, organised by members of a gym in Tasmania.

"I started in 2011 walking the Coast to Coast, I try to do something every year for a charity.

He said: "I've done some challenges but this is the toughest thing I've done. It's more psychological than physical, that's the challenge."

James has raised £505 on Just Giving so far and he hopes to reach £1000.

"Samaritans sent me an email saying every £5 I raise could help save a life, that's massive for me."

The personal element to James' fundraiser will give him added motivation when the going gets tough: "I've got a Samaritans banner on the wall, it just reminds you why your doing what your doing."
