Volunteers at Christ Church, Great Broughton, are appealing for people to get in touch in order to gather comprehensive details on unmarked graves in their grounds.
The information is required for a new database that they are compiling.
Church members have said that most graves in the Christ Church grounds have already been marked with a name, age and date of death and are therefore ‘known’.
However, there are several unmarked spaces, where the occupation is not known and these might be at risk of being excavated because they could be thought to be unoccupied.
It is possible that such an ‘unknown’ space could be used for a new burial and only be discovered as being already occupied when the grave is being prepared.
To make sure this does not happen, they are gathering information on any unmarked graves in the grounds so that the place and details can be recorded.
The database is being compiled by Ken Harkness, on behalf of Christ Church and for the village.
If anyone can provide any information on an unmarked grave at Christ Church, especially name details, they are asked to get in touch with Pauline Harkness on 01900 824563.
