A community-minded group worked their way round Cockermouth, filling 15 bags with rubbish.

Thirteen people – made up of members of the town’s Rotary Club and their friends – worked in small groups. They organised the event as part of a national Keep Britain Clean campaign, which had originally been scheduled for March but had to be postponed.

Valerie Ayre said: “With litter pickers, bin bags and gloves, we split into teams covering many of the streets in six different directions. We gathered 15 bags of litter, rubbish and plastic and enjoyed a couple of hours of chat and fellowship.

“An amazing amount of rubbish was collected, particularly plastic gloves. Hopefully we’ve helped our environment a bit as well as tidying up.”

More than 100 people took part in events throughout Allerdale.
