The UK Government has asked the medical and healthcare products Regulatory Agency to assess the Oxford coronavirus vaccine for safety.

The AstraZenca Covid-19 vaccine has moved a step closer to being rolled out as the Government has formally requested that the health regulator assess its safety.

After advanced trials, Oxford scientists reported that the vaccine could be 90 per cent effective with the right dosage.

The Government has pre-ordered doses of each vaccine in the works, 100 million of the AstraZeneca jab and 40 million doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.

UK residents could be among the first in the world to receive the vaccine if authorised. The Government hopes to start rolling out the vaccine to the most vulnerable groups before Christmas.
