CRIMINALS jailed in January include a rapist, men who were caught minding an industrial-scale cannabis factory and those arrested for county lines drug offences.

The list below includes some of the offenders that were put behind bars by judges during January.

The offenders' names and a summary of what led to them appearing in the dock are as follows:

Paul Devaney

Times and Star:

A BINGE-drinking Carlisle “monster” who raped two women has been jailed for 18-and-a-half years.

Paul Devaney left one of his victims sobbing after continuing a sick sex attack despite her desperate attempts to push him away.

Carlisle Crown Court heard depraved Devaney later told her “sorry”, and added flippantly: “Drink in, wits out.”

TWO men caught minding an "industrial scale" cannabis factory in a former Wigton bank have been jailed.

Carlisle Crown Court heard that a police raid on the former Barclays Bank in King Street in October last year uncovered a huge and sophisticated cannabis growing operation, complete with growing lamps, hydroponic watering and feeding systems, and plants worth £184,000.

In total, there was 18.5 kilos of cannabis, the court heard.

POLICE who raided a house in Carlisle which was the HQ of a county lines drug dealing operation found a crossbow on the landing, loaded and pointing at the front door.

At the city's crown court today, a judge handed down lengthy jail terms to two men and a woman who were all involved in the illegal heroin and crack cocaine dealing operation, which saw drug bosses sending out hundreds of text messages advertising the drugs over 16 days.

The three defendants involved – Laura McGannan, 33, Luke Waeling, 34, and 22-year-old Alexander Nyarashe – admitted conspiring to supply the two Class A drugs.

Barry Doswell

A BANNED driver arrested for driving a tractor on a residential Carlisle street claimed he had coronavirus – and then spat at a police officer.

But Barry Doswell’s appalling behaviour earned him a jail sentence when he appeared at the city’s Rickergate Court.

Magistrates heard that the 32-year-old had come to the attention of police on the afternoon of July 15 last year.
