Emergency services are currently at the scene of a crash on a busy Carlisle road.

Cumbria Constabulary has confirmed that they were called at 12.56pm today to the report of a serious road traffic collision on West Tower Street in Carlisle. 

The incident involved a vehicle and two pedestrians.

The road is currently closed with Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and police at the scene.

The Great North Air Ambulance landed outside Carlisle Castle to assist and has since taken off again.

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Serivce said: "We’ve attended with multiple resources including an air ambulance following reports of an road traffic collision."

"We’ve taken one female patient to hospital via helicopter."

A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance said: ""We airlifted one person from the scene to a hospital in Preston.

"We were called at 12.55pm to an incident in the city centre, there was a doctor and paramedic on board."

The helicopter flew from it Langwathby base in a journey that took 10 minutes.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria Police said: "The road may be closed for some time whilst investigations are conducted."

"Congestion is to be expected in the area and road users are advised to plan their routes accordingly."

A police cordon has been erected from Debenhams. Cumbria County Council has issued a plea on social media to avoid the area if possible as emergency services are still at the scene.
