This week, we take a trip down memory lane to remember days of fun and excitement at Workington’s Plaza Cinema.

It was announced this week that the Dunmail Park shopping centre venue will not reopen after lockdown.

In a statement, they said: “After 20 amazing years of welcoming you to our Plaza cinema, we are very sad to announce that the cinema will not be reopening.

“Having been a part of this community for so long we really don’t want to say goodbye, but we have been unable to agree lease terms to allow us to stay on at Dunmail Park.

“Our intention is to create a new cinema in Workington.

“We will provide further details on social media and via our Plaza newsletter as we progress.

“We are so very proud of the Plaza team who have worked tirelessly over the years to bring you a great cinema experience with a welcoming smile.

“Our team have some great memories of the Plaza and the great blockbuster films we’ve shown over the years, it’s been our pleasure to welcome so many of you.

And so in today’s nostalgia gallery, we looked back on the fun times that have been enjoyed by both staff and customers alike down the years.

Featured today we see lookalikes on the first day at the cinema with none other than‘Jack Nicholson’ and ‘Marilyn Monroe’ in attendance.

The inverted commas should tell you something!

We also see the those in attendance at hit films from down the years such as the ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’.

We also look back at the phenomena that was One Direction and see Directioners who made their way to the cinema to watch one of their films in the 2010s.

And, heart-warmingly, we also see the times staff went above and beyond and raised money for their community.

For those featured, both staff and customers, these pictures will surely bring back some happy memories.

If you have any recollections to share with us about the cinema, please do get in touch.
