WITH pub-goers able to sit inside at last, this week we look at a range of choices put forward by our readers for a place to get a good lunch.

There is no shortage of inspirations for somewhere new to try in Cumbria.

Next time you’re out searching for a new place to eat and drink, remember this useful list to find some local favourites.

Without further ado and in no particular order, here are the best places for a pub lunch, as decided by our readers:

1 ROYAL YEW, DEAN, COCKERMOUTH

One reviewer recounted a trip to the popular Royal Yew in the village of Dean. He said: “Me and my girlfriend had a meal here. It was outstanding! Highly recommend!

He added: “The staff are friendly and welcoming, there is a really good choice of menu for all dietary needs whether you are gluten-free or vegan.

"It is very clean and very nicely set out, a nice fire burning by the bar also.

“It is in the village of Dean and very easily accessible.”

2 THE GALLOPING HORSE, WORKINGTON

Reviewer Tom W was unequivocal in his praise of this Workington haunt.

He said: “Just had dinner in the Galloping Horse, well controlled and arranged, food as good as always, staff as efficient and friendly as ever.”

Jane Allport added: “Beautifully laid out, some lovely paintings, and staff were excellent.

"Very easy-going but efficient and helpful.”

Another stated: “Lovely pub with great food and friendly staff.

"Well set up for Covid restrictions.”

3 KING’S ARMS, BOWNESS-ON-SOLWAY

Reader Kelly Skinner was comprehensive in her vow to make this gem her first pub stop following the relaxation of Government regulations this week.

“Definitely the King’s Arms at Bowness on Solway,” she said, before praising their “fantastic food and customer service”.

One reviewer added: “Such lovely friendly staff!

"Good traditional food, well cooked with Careful Covid measures”

4 THE LIFEBOAT INN, MARYPORT

Kenneth Southwell was in little doubt where he will be heading later this week for a pub lunch and a tipple.

“The Lifeboat Inn hands down. Only the best will do,” he stated.

Reviewer John P added: “The food is excellent with a good range and enormous portions.

"The fish and chips is a particular favourite of mine with the main event drooping over both sides of the plate.

"This for under seven quid is ridiculous.

"There are always at least three locally-brewed real ales available which adds to the attraction.”

5 THE BELLE VUE, PAPCASTLE, COCKERMOUTH

Margaret Johnstone Corrigan and Judith Winder agreed that this the Belle Vue stood out as the place to head for a substantial meal.

“Absolutely the best,” stated Judith.

One reviewer said: “We had a lovely lunch at the Belle Vue in Cockermouth.”
