AN ATHLETE has smashed several records in his most recent run, topping the 800 metre world rankings.

Oliver Dustin, 20 from Workington ran the 800 metres in a time of 1.43.82 on Saturday.

His dad Paul said: “It’s a fantastic achievement, he’s the fastest in the world at this moment.”

The run saw him smash Seb Coe’s Under 23 British record and Chris McGeorge’s Cumbrian record.

“He’s going to be in the all time list for Britain.”

Dustin’s run has propelled him into the athletics spotlight. His performance in Nice places him at number five on Britain’s all time outdoor athletes list.

“You can imagine his worlds gone absolutely upside down. He’s in talks with the major sports companies.”

The Birmingham University student is currently in quarantine in France but is hoping to come back to Cumbrian this week.

His previous personal best in the 800 metres was 1:46.84 in 2019. Dustin will look to put in a strong performance in the upcoming Olympic trials.

Paul said: “He’s been looking to qualify for the Olympics but it’ll be tough.”

The talent is stacked in Dustin’s sport at the moment but Paul said: “He’s set himself as a leading contender.

“If he doesn’t make the Olympics he’s got a fall back of the Under 23 Championships.”

He is proud of his son and thankful to those who are helping him on his journey.

“Him and his coach Graeme Mason are just so dedicated to what he does.

“I know he’s my son but the effort and time he’s put into it...I’ve never seen a kid as dedicated to one thing. He’s basically put his life on hold.”

Dustin does not let his ongoing success change his attitude.

“He’s very level headed. He just loves it he loves the whole atmosphere. He never complains about training.”
