AN “INCREDIBLE” moment lies ahead for a Workington runner as he has punched his ticket to the Olympics in Tokyo.

Workington’s 800 metre runner Oliver Dustin, 20, secured his place in the Olympics with a strong second place performance on Saturday at the qualifying finals, the Müller British Championships in Manchester.

Despite being edged by Elliot Giles, Dustin’s time of 1.45.12 clinched his place in the GB squad.

Speaking to the Times & Star, Dustin said that he is thrilled to receive the opportunity.

“It’s incredible, a bit surreal but it does feel good, I went to the kitting out yesterday, that made it sink in a little bit.”

It was a childhood dream to make the Olympic squad and compete on the grandest stage.

Dustin said: “For every young up and coming athlete, that is the pinnacle. To make the Olympic team at 20 was never the plan. I’ve worked really hard but things have come really quickly.”

Prior to the qualifying finals Dustin ran the 800 metres in a time of 1.43.82.

The record breaking performance in Nice made the Cumbrian the fastest in the world over 800 metres.

He said: “I saw the lads 15 metres behind me and I thought ‘I can’t have just done 1.43’

“I went over to the timing officials and they said ‘wait it’s coming up’”

There was an “agonising” moment of suspense before Dustin found out he had broken the legendary Seb Coe’s record.

He will look to continue the momentum when he travels to Tokyo.

“To be on that team you’ve got to be the best in the world, there’s an expectation on us to bring back at least a medal.”

Dustin flies out to Yokohama on July 16 but he first has the opportunity to set the tone at the Diamond League in Monaco.

“The same magic happens in Monaco it’s the fastest track in the world.”
