FOOTBALL Fans have been left devastated by the Lions defeat to Italy on Sunday evening.

However many die hard fans are looking forward to next year with dreams of England pushing forward to win the Fifa World Cup in Qatar next Christmas.

Throughout this years tournament fans have packed out pubs all around the county to watch Southgate’s men as they made their ways through the rounds of the tournament.

However, with plans for a big screen in Workington as part of the governments Town Deal - West Cumbrian fans may have a chance at watching the beautiful game in a fanzone atmosphere like those of Preston and Newcastle

As part of the fund the council plan to establish a screen at the sports centre site in the town, the works are to be completed this summer, creating much excitement at the possibility for fans in next years world cup.

A spokesman for Allerdale, said :”Last year the council received £750,000 in accelerated funding from the Towns Fund to complete a number of projects in Workington, in addition to the £23m secured through the initiative earlier this year.

“The funding is being used for a new cycleway, to support the demolition and redevelopment of the old opera house building in the town centre and public realm improvements near the leisure centre, which include an outdoor gym, an events space and an area for a big screen.

“Work on these schemes is nearing completion and it is anticipated they will be officially opened later this summer.”
