The Lake District has been named the top staycation destination that motorists are planning on heading to this summer, as two thirds of Brits prepare for domestic holidays.

The findings come from navigation app Waze, who has released this data in order to help UK motorists prepare for the summer rush.

Other key results included, alongside the Lakes, Cornwall and Devon being popular staycation spots this year, routes like the M6, A30, A38, M5 and A303 are likely to be hotbeds for traffic throughout the summer season.

The sudden spike in staycation traffic is also bad news for drivers - over half (53%) of whom state traffic is their biggest gripe when headed on a domestic holiday, Waze said.

They also found that thoroughfares to major UK airports like Manchester are expected to become congested by those risking international travel, following bookings to amber destinations increasing by up to 400%.
