A FORMER student of a Cockermouth school who tragically died in a mountaineering accident last year will be remembered with an annual award.

Richard Armstrong died in February 2020 in Scotland.

His mother, Joan Armstrong, contacted his former school, Cockermouth School, because she wanted to make a donation in his memory, to the Chemistry department.

Chemistry was his favourite subject.

A school spokesman said: "Mrs Joan Armstrong has made a very kind donation to the Chemistry department.

"Trevor Carruthers, head of Chemistry, decided that some of the funds should be used to present an annual award to the most Outstanding Chemist of the Year, in Richard’s Memory.

"The remaining funds will be used to purchase some new equipment for the department that can be used to help inspire other budding chemists to explore their passion for the subject."

The Richard James Armstrong Award was presented to Year 12 student Lizzie Pawson by Mrs Armstrong at the end of term, along with a copy of Richard’s favourite book – McMurry Organic Chemistry.

Richard used to take his book away with him on his holidays each year and would write in it where he had been, said his mother.

She said afterwards: "It was a lovely morning at the school and it was a pleasure to meet everyone.

"Lizzie is a well deserved recipient and I only hope I didn’t detract from Lizzie’s achievement by talking so much about Richard.

"I cannot express how pleased I am about this memorial prize.’

Lizzie said: "I was really surprised to receive the award.

"I have worked so hard over the past year and have just got my mock results back; it was lovely to see that my hard work had been recognised."

The teenager aims to study medicine after she has completed her A Levels next year.

Mr Carruthers said: "Lizzie has such a bright future ahead of her, she is truly is an exceptional student."
